about

Call it timely that a song inspired by overcoming adversity and making it out of the horrific experience of Hurricane Katrina is dropping this week. Or better yet, perhaps even divine timing considering the song’s author is currently evacuated with her family for Hurricane Ida with an indefinite return since the entire city of New Orleans is currently without electricity. Obstacles such as these don’t stop a storyteller, they contribute to writing the tale. Voice Monet’s is one of triumph, and seeing the silver lining amongst the dark storm clouds. So much so, she chose to weave the tale into a soulfully intoxicating house track produced by her longtime collaborator and tour DJ, P.U.D.G.E. (Queens, NY). While most people don’t automatically associate catastrophe with dance, Ms. Monet’s ability to move the words in and around the heartbeat of the music while bringing you into her story of artful watery metaphors and literal recall of her experience hint to mastery at work.

lyrics

Down in Treme…
Verse One
There was a time when I operated from a state of mind
That always had me broke
But I'd always keep enough for a bit of dat lah
roll a blunt and then I'd smoke
From a foggy head space had to face life in combat
on an uphill slope
In a cloud of smoke
at my imaginary desk, post-its and mental notes
Then I'd throw it all to the wind
Like the opening credits, Murder She Wrote
Steady on the case at a turtle pace
But nearly missed the boat
Thought each exhale
Pushed the sail
That kept my ship afloat
In actuality, vision ain't what it used to be
Coast Guard brought me back sonically
admonished me
Noticed my sail's poor quality
And how it stifled me
Respond defensively cuz he could see something in me
That I couldn't see (most likely naivety)
Had way too many "frenemies"
Outwardly I was their MVP
But secretly they harbored jealousy
And quite truthfully, my ship was at capacity
So overboard they went like Natalie
Minus the mystery
Left them out to sea with no dinghy or jet ski
Pissed, hollering at me
exposing their insanity
Used to look me in my eyes and call me "family"
but you bitched out cowardly
and left me space for clarity
Put out my blee, continued on my path of verity
Now all that time spent
Is merely HISTORY

Hook
Was always climbing and climbing
but steady struggling (struggling)
Couldn't see the silver outlining
when I was struggling (struggling)
Brushed off the dirt and found diamonds
while I was struggling (struggling)
And now prosperity's blinding
and I'm not struggling (struggling)

Verse Two
He called me up
Rang my phone
Told me that, something was going on
Worse case scenario
The wind would blow
In from NorthEast, we in a fish bowl
Beneath the level of the sea
Couldn't see...
Water over 20ft
Boats in the street
Though he was telling me
We NEVER spoke of anarchy
Or predict, being left behind in a forgotten city
I told him "No"
Take my son, I will not go
If I live to see the water rise
I'll hit the second flo
with all my perishables
And all my hope
Ride it out guerilla style
he told me "NOPE"
point blank
"Put some gas up in your tank, and make sure you're paper's straight at your bank"
Thanked him at the shelter
In Lafayette
When all that would come through was a text
Never forget
all the heat and the sweat
as we headed west
continuous drive with little rest
would never think
we'd reach LA and be blessed
In the strangest ways
gifts manifest
Evacuated...
and God brought us Yusef!

Hook
Was always climbing and climbing
but steady struggling (struggling)
Couldn't see the silver outlining
when I was struggling (struggling)
Brushed off the dirt and found diamonds
while I was struggling (struggling)
And now prosperity's blinding
and I'm not struggling (struggling)
